Description:

Ontario is another entity created by fleeing Loyalists from the American Revolution, initially called Upper Canada to separate it from French-dominated Lower Canada, or what is now Quebec. It has become the industrialized hinterland of Canada and home to eight million people, most of whom seem to congregate in the vicinity of Toronto. In area, Ontario far exceeds the size of Europe or any American state. Side 1 is dedicated to northern Ontario, a vast region of lakes and rivers, but relatively few people. The Lake of the Woods region was mapped by fur trappers and now forms a watery border between Canada and the USA. Further east, near Thunder Bay, is Old Fort William, the greatest fur fort ever made, and east of that is the Precambrian Shield, the oldest mountains on earth and source of much of the world’s mineral wealth.
