A finely engraved map of Eastern Canada, with a large compass rose, showing an accurate Prince Edward Island and the first map showing a north-south orientation of Lake Champlain. Designed (and probably also engraved) by Hessel Gerritsz for de Laet's 'Beschrijving van West-Indien'. The map shows the area from Cape Cod to Newfoundland, with Quebec, Prince Edward Island and Lake Champlain. It is one of the earliest depictions of Canada, and one of the foundation maps. Copperplate engraving; colored outline.
